Cups to Grams Converter — by Ingredient

A cup is a volume, not a weight — so the answer depends on what is in it: 2 cups of all-purpose flour is 240 g, while 2 cups of sugar would be 400 g and 2 cups of butter 454 g. Pick your ingredient above and the converter uses its real density.

How this conversion works

This is the page Google's one-line answer cannot give you, because the honest answer is 'it depends'. A cup measures space; a gram measures mass; the bridge between them is how densely the ingredient packs. Spooned-and-levelled flour is mostly air — 120 g to the cup. Sugar packs tighter at 200 g. Butter barely packs air at all: 227 g.

Choose the ingredient, then type either side: cups become grams for the scale, grams become cups for the measuring jug. How you fill the cup matters too — flour scooped straight from the bag can run 20% heavy versus spooned and levelled, which is why serious bakers weigh. The densities here assume the standard spoon-and-level method for dry goods.

The exact formula

grams = cups × grams-per-cup for that ingredient
There is no single cups-to-grams constant — there is one per ingredient. This page uses the standard reference densities in the chart below (King Arthur Baking's widely used figures): flour 120, granulated sugar 200, butter 227 g per US cup.

Exact constants, honest rounding. Every conversion here uses the exact international definitions printed on the page (1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly). Results are rounded for display only — the working underneath is never rounded. For engineering, medical or legal work, verify against a certified instrument.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup of flour?

120 g for all-purpose flour, spooned and levelled. Scooping the cup through the bag packs it and can push the same cup toward 140 g — the single biggest error in home baking.

Why do different sites give different grams for a cup?

Because densities are conventions, not definitions: each reference (King Arthur, the USDA, various publishers) measured slightly different packing. They agree within a few percent; this page uses King Arthur's chart throughout so its numbers are at least consistent with each other.

How many cups is 250 g of sugar?

1.25 cups — 250 ÷ 200 g per cup. Type it into the converter with sugar selected to check.
